How do I handle packages safely?

Health Canada, CDC, and WHO have all said that it is unlikely that you can contact the virus from packages as the virus is unlikely to survive in those conditions. However, if you still want to be extra safe, here are some steps you could take:
  1. Open packages outside of your home—handle them with gloves, or disinfect with wipes first. If you can, allow packages to sit outside for 24 hours before opening.
  2. Dispose of packaging materials outside and do not bring them inside the home.
  3. Bring the contents of the package inside.
  4. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
  5. Clean surfaces with a disinfectant to kill the potential presence of the virus.
